In El silencio de los niños, Costa Rican director Sofía Quirós Ubeda reflects on the discovery of love and sexual awakening during childhood. She does so with domestic archive material and a direct look at the actress who tells her memories in front of the camera using this material that functions as memory. The story works fiction as non-fiction and starts from a logic that Quirós considers «cold»: what material can I recycle, and hence the use of these home videos. The filmmaker, who won a Special Jury Mention at the Mar del Plata Festival and the Best National Short Film Award at the Costa Rica Festival, narrates this childhood infatuation between two cousins: «I wanted to tackle the taboo, not only from a sexual point of view, but also from an affective one».

Winner of a Goya for Best New Actor in 2018 for Handía, Eneko Sagardoy, makes his directorial debut with the short film Betiko Gaua, for which he has some top-notch performers: Elena Irureta and Miren Gaztañaga. The filmmaker offers a suspenseful road movie that is also an allegory of motherhood and a reflection of the lack of communication. The director, an actor since he was 17, admits to feeling comfortable in this new role, although he admits: «I would never have seen myself writing or directing a car chase, I’m not much of a heterosexual, testosteronic director».

Celia Viada Caso, an Asturian filmmaker who received seven awards at the 58th FICX for her debut film La calle del agua, now approaches with Gregoria, which has its world premiere at the Festival, the everyday life of the woman who gives the short film its title; a woman who worked in the fields all her life and who, every week, went to the market to sell her produce.

«I shot the film without any pretensions of making a film, it was more of a game and an exercise, notes to make a film» and as he acknowledges, «the beautiful thing is that in the film, chance creeps in, life creeps in, mistakes creep in».
